Many Tools And Devices In Trucking Originated With The Military

The relationship between the military and the trucking industry goes back to World War I. In 1917, even before the United States entered the war, Mack ACs were used to bring supplies to British troops. Because of their incredible (for the time) ruggedness and reliability under the most adverse conditions, the Brits called them “Bulldog trucks.” Two years later, the U.S. Army convoyed across the U.S. following the Lincoln Highway (now I-80 and U.S. 30) to test its mobility under [...]

More And More Couples Are Trucking Together — And Loving It

Though Art Johnson and Amanda Jones had been seeing each other for a year, they rarely had a chance to actually see each other at all. Art was working as a local truck driver for a meat-packing plant, where he hauled offal through Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada. Amanda was at the meatpacking plant, too, as a security guard regularly working 12-hour shifts. “At the end of the long day, I’d get home first, and Art would still be working [...]

Truck Tires Have Developed Into Sophisticated Tools Of Fuel Economy

There are many factors that affect the fuel mileage attained by any given vehicle, including drivers, the shape and condition of the truck, maintenance, routes, climate, load and, of course, tires. A Mobile Driver Training Simulator

Almost everyone considers themselves a good driver. Terry Kearns, a truck driver for nearly 30 years and now a trainer in safe driving with the Paducah Area Transit System, can shatter that self-image in a matter of minutes.   All it takes is a seat behind the wheel of the Mobile Driver Training Simulator. “You would be surprised at how many ‘good’ drivers have bad habits,” he says. “We’ll have someone come in for training, letting us know that they’ve been driving [...]

General Motors’ midsize diesel truck ready to roll

GM has dropped the deets on its new diesel pickups. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon will be available this fall with a new 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel that’ll cost $3,730 more than equivalent trucks with V6 gasoline engines. At starting prices of $31,700 and $33,200, respectively, the diesels will deliver 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque that’s good for a max tow rating of 7,700 pounds in two-wheel-drive trucks, up from 7,000 for the V6. The diesels are available only in [...]
